Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes Trying To See Best Out Of The Travis Kelce Punching Situation

The Kansas City Chiefs’ resolve to be a top team won’t be called into doubt by Patrick Mahomes. Over the past five seasons, the Chiefs have won 64 games, advanced to the conference final each year, won two Super Bowls, and captured three AFC titles.

Following Wednesday’s training camp practice, Mahomes addressed the Kelce incident in a news conference. He said that it was an indication of the team’s tenacity.

Given that Kansas City won two Super Bowls in the previous four seasons, there is no reason to think that they will lose their competitive advantage. Travis Kelce’s memorable punch during training camp served as Mahomes’ justification for not being concerned about Kansas City being complacent.

Kelce, a standout with the Chiefs, garnered negative attention this week.

Although the defender did back up a bit as he recognized Kelce had already safely cradled the football, Kelce managed to catch a touchdown pass ahead of him as he tried to punch the ball loose.

Nevertheless, Kelce, one of the finest tight ends in the league, became enraged and struck the defender, starting a fight. Fortunately, everyone who was engaged was wearing a helmet, so it’s doubtful that any serious repercussions were experienced.

Kelce has subsequently apologized for the nasty incident, posting on social media: “Gotta be a better teammate, gotta be a better leader, simple as that.” Nevertheless, it was an awful moment.

“I think we all have it. We have a lot of guys out here that are super competitive, but it’s about just doing it the right way,” Mahomes said. “Trav (Travis Kelce) punching the guy, not necessarily the way you want to do it, but you love the fire. You love the fire on both sides of the ball.”

Mahomes can see the motivation and will to succeed even in a future Hall of Fame tight end. Despite his desire to lead more effectively, Kelce unintentionally set a bad example in a situation that he is surely not proud of.

“Trying to finish to the last second, but that’s just the type of guys we are,” Mahomes said. “We’re going to compete, we’re going to argue on the football field, and then we’re going to love each other in the locker room.

“We have a lot of dudes that are super competitive on this team.”

“Trav punching the guy, not necessarily the way you want to do it, but you love the fire. You love the fire on both sides of the ball trying to finish to the last second.”

When the Chiefs face the Detroit Lions on Sept. 7, Mahomes is hoping they can transfer that fervor onto the field.
