Charles Barkley Rips New NCAA Leader’s Plan To Talk To Lawmakers On NIL: ‘Awful People’

Charles Barkley has never been one to hold back from sharing his thoughts on anything and everything.

His criticism of NCAA President Charlie Baker’s suggestion to speak with legislators about ways to support college players, their families, and institutions with NIL criteria continued on Thursday night.

On the NCAA tournament pregame show on Thursday night, Greg Gumbel and Clark Kellogg sat down with Baker, and the former governor of Massachusetts discussed travelling to obtain assistance from folks in Washington, D.C.

Barkley informed Gumbel after the interview that he absolutely disagreed with the notion, saying:

“Did he say we’re going to ask the politicians to help us? See, that pisses me off already. Our politicians are awful people… we can’t ask these politicians nothin’. Those people are awful people. Democrats and Republicans- they’re all crooks.”

Told you Barkley didn’t hold back at all.

“Did he say we’re going to ask the politicians to help us?” Barkley asked after shaking his head.

“See, that pisses me off already. Our politicians are awful people.”

The Basketball Hall of Famer said that he would prefer speaking to “people who actually care about basketball” about NIL discussions — explaining that he would put a committee together with coaches, players and others, including broadcast partner Clark Kellogg.

“We can’t ask these politicians nothing,” Barkley said. “Those people are awful people. Democrats and Republicans — they’re all crooks.”

Student-athletes will be able to make money off of their name, likeness, and image thanks to an NCAA regulation change in 2021. Several players who are also social media influencers earn between six and seven figures annually.

Two of the highest-paid college athletes are Haley and Hanna Cavinder, University of Miami basketball players and TikTok sensations who have made an estimated seven figures in NIL deals.
