Chael Sonnen Snubs Conor McGregor and Suggests a ‘Glaringly Obvious’ Matchup for Tony Ferguson

Despite being on a four-fight skid Tony Ferguson’s stock in the UFC has not taken a hit. ‘El Cucuy’ has built up a cult following in the UFC that supports him through thick and thin. In his most recent outing, Ferguson was stopped by Chandler in the second round of their fight via a vicious front kick. Since then, both pundits and fans alike have pondered what could be next for Tony Ferguson.

In his latest video, former UFC title challenger turned pundit, Chael Sonnen suggested a matchup for Tony Ferguson. He said, “It is so glaringly obvious to me that Tony needs to be up at 170 and his next opponent is Nate Diaz. That is so glaringly obvious to me but I don’t think that Tony and Nate, maybe those guys are buddies because they both did the same art, both came through the same organization, they’ve certainly known each other for years, they geographically don’t live that far apart. I’ve never seen them being chummy but I’ve also never seen the opposite.”

Tony Ferguson is far from done with his fighting career

Going into the fight against Chandler, the common consensus among fans and pundits was that a loss could spell the end of Ferguson’s career in the UFC, given his age and the manner in which he had lost his previous fights. However, UFC President Dana White stated that irrespective of the result it would not be the end of Tony Ferguson in the UFC.

After the fight, ‘El Cucuy’ stated that he was not done fighting. The former interim champion stated that he would be back in action after a short break from the sport. Sonnen added in his video that given Ferguson is 38-years old his body will not handle a weight cut to 155-pounds the same way it did a few years back which is why a fight at 170-pounds makes sense for him. Furthermore, Diaz is on the last fight of his UFC contract and the UFC will not have a better chance than now to book a fight between the two of the biggest fan-favorite fighters in the UFC.
