Chael Sonnen Praises UFC Rival Jon Jones for Doing “A Lot of Things that Nobody Else Can Do”
Multiple-time former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen has always had an interesting relationship with all-time great Jon Jones. Both men have gone back and forth on social media several times in recent years, and some nasty words have been exchanged on both sides over the years. Moreover, they also shared the cage together back when Jones was the undisputed light heavyweight champion.
Despite their rivalry both inside and outside the cage, there has always seemingly been a mutual respect for the other and this has slipped out on occasion. Notably, in a recent video uploaded to his YouTube channel, Sonnen talked about how he was still very much invested in the ‘Jon Jones experiment’ up in the heavyweight division.
Jon Jones always has Chael Sonnen’s attention
‘The American Gangster’ revealed that despite the long-drawn talks for a move up to heavyweight by Jones, he was still interested to see how ‘Bones’ would perform. According to Sonnen, Jon Jones possessed skills unlike many others, and in turn, could do things no one else can.
It’s this variable that makes Jon Jones the ultimate prizefighter in the eyes of UFC fans.
“This Jon Jones experiment hasn’t fallen deaf on me yet. I am still very into this. If this was any other athlete than Jon Jones, and you had any one of three clues, I would tell you he’s going to lose. For example, he hasn’t fought in two years, whoever that person is, it’s not going to be a good night, history would back me up on that.”
“If you tell me that an athlete is going to participate, who is now at a new gym in a completely different state than he resides, I’m going to tell you the outcome isn’t going to be wonderful. Jon has all of those things stacked up against him, but the problem is he’s Jon Jones. He’s done a lot of things that nobody else can do.” [h/t bjpenn.com]
The respect Chael Sonnen has for what Jon Jones has accomplished inside the cage is always on display when he talks about his career. Like Sonnen, a large majority of the fan base can’t wait to see how Jones looks in his heavyweight debut that is slated for September.
