The New York Post’s Andrew Marchand reported that CBS became concerned about Tony Romo’s level of preparation for the network’s football telecasts.
CBS Called An Intervention On Tony Romo With Regards To Downfall In Quality
Marchand and John Ourand this week discussed the network’s worries in their podcast.
“Tony Romo needs to study more,” Marchand said on The Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast. “He needs to be better prepared. As you move away from the sidelines, you need to do more work. I know CBS is aware of this. They tried an intervention last offseason. They knew, they anticipated this. That’s a credit to them, the people in charge there. But it has not gotten better.”
CBS had attempted an “intervention” with broadcaster Tony Romo in advance of the 2022 season, but things “did not get better” per @AndrewMarchand

CBS Sports executives noticed that Tony Romo’s NFL analysis had lost some of its sparkle during the previous offseason. They therefore set up a sort of intervention.
According to sources, executives, including CBS Sports chairman Sean McManus and Jim Rikhoff, the head NFL game producer for CBS, flew on separate trips to Romo’s Dallas home in an effort to get him to concentrate more on being fully prepared and to help him find a way to mesh better with his broadcast partner, Jim Nantz.

We often meet with our on-air talent, so to term this an intervention is just inaccurate, according to Jen Sabatelle, a spokesman for CBS Sports.
Whatever you want to call it, beginning in 2017, the executives tried to get Romo back to the way he was during his first three years on air by watching tapes with him, having dinner with him, and talking about the broadcast. This led to what was at the time the biggest sportscasting contract ever, a 10-year deal worth a total of $180 million.

Romo has faced criticism from media snobs, social media users, and TV sports insiders. Because Super Bowl LVIII, which will be played in Las Vegas on February 11, 2024, will air on CBS, the Romo-Nantz combination will be even more relevant in a year.
Officials from CBS intend to try to resolve the problems with the network’s lead team once more during the offseason.
