Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell Sets Record Of 71 Points, Joins Kobe Bryant In Top 10

Donovan Mitchell collected a loose ball during overtime on Monday night in Cleveland and raced toward one of his 22 baskets faster than anybody else on the court in his 48th minute of game action.

He was simply stronger and faster than anyone on his Cleveland Cavaliers team or the Chicago Bulls as he put the finishing touches on a legendary game.

Cavaliers’ Donovan Mitchell Sets Record Of 71 Points, Matched Kobe Bryant’s Record

Donovan Mitchell, who was already an All-Star, put his name to one of the NBA’s most exclusive lists on Monday night.

The Cleveland Cavaliers came back from 21 points down to defeat the Chicago Bulls 145-134 in overtime on Monday night, thanks in large part to Mitchell, who established a franchise record with 71 points, the most by an NBA player in 17 years.

Donovan Mitchell’s score tied the eighth-highest mark in league history, surpassing Kobe Bryant’s 81 points against Toronto on January 22, 2006, while he was a member of the Lakers. The NBA record is held by Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 100 points for Philadelphia versus New York on March 2, 1962, at Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Donovan Mitchell scored 13 points in the extra session after forcing OT by grabbing his own intentionally missed free throw and making a circus-shot with 3.0 seconds left, tying the game at 130-all and breaking the Cavaliers record with 58 points.

“To be there in the record book with guys like Wilt is truly humbling,” said Donovan Mitchell, who was acquired from Utah in the offseason. “I always believed I could be one of the best players in the league. I’m speechless and blessed to be in the company of that greatness.”

Coach JB Bickerstaff of Cleveland commented, “We were treated today to one of the finest performances in the history of the game. “He made plays that were essential in each and every one of them.

How can you not support a person like Donovan who has never put himself before the team? I told everyone else to get out of the way.”

In addition, Donovan Mitchell tied career highs with 11 assists and 8 rebounds in 50 minutes while also setting records with 20 made and 25 attempted free throws. In the first quarter, he scored five points, in the second, 11, in the third, and in the fourth, he scored 24, and so on.
