Cardinals Pitcher Jordan Montgomery After Seven Consecutive Losses This Season: ‘I’m not a loser’

Recall how last year, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman sent center fielder Harrison Bader to the Cardinals in exchange for left-hander Jordan Montgomery? Montgomery then began to pitch like a Cy Young Award contender.

Montgomery finally lost his touch. Bader has demonstrated that he can have an influence. And now, for Montgomery, everything has taken a sharp turn for the worst. The Cardinals have lost each of his previous 10 starts, and he has dropped seven straight decisions.

This season, the St. Louis Cardinals are struggling to win games. Before a recent cold snap, things were temporarily on the right track after digging themselves a significant hole to start the year.

The Cardinals have a choice to make as the trade deadline on August 1 approaches. They are now 25-35 overall and 3-7 in their past ten games. St. Louis may decide to kick the proverbial can down the road and regroup in 2024 if the season continues to go poorly.

The Cards have dropped 10 straight games when Montgomery has been on the mound after winning the first two.

“I am not [a] loser,” Montgomery told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “I’m going to keep giving them everything I’ve got out there. The team knows that. Manager knows it. Pitching coach knows it. Fan base knows it. … Baseball stinks. It’s not always easy. It’s not always going to go great. Everybody has to stick with what they do – and try to do it better.”

The Pirates won the game 4-3 after Pittsburgh knotted the score at 1-1 in the fifth and grabbed a 4-1 lead in the sixth.

“Could care less about me recording a W,” Montgomery said. “Just really want the team to win. But, still super early, so we’ll keep going out there, and I’ll keep giving them everything I got.”

On 98 occasions (97 starts),  over parts of six seasons with the Yankees, Montgomery went 22-20 with a 3.94 ERA and 478 strikeouts.
