Can QB Brock Purdy Thrive And Take The 49ers To The Super Bowl?

Purdy already had a plan to start at quarterback for the NFL, but it wasn’t quite like this. Lance joined the Dallas Cowboys two years after his initial move, and the 262nd and last choice in the 2022 Draft—a player with a large collegiate sample size but a smaller and less-pay-per-view punch—will be the one to guide the 49ers into the upcoming campaign.

Can QB Brock Purdy Thrive And Take The 49ers To The Super Bowl?

What was once a chance that was sort of won by accident has subsequently changed into an opportunity that was earned, at which point all of Mr. Irrelevant’s chatter and interest have turned into background noise.

Every NFL Draft’s last selection is known as “Mr. Irrelevant.” That includes Brock Purdy, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, who made a name for himself last season after Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance suffered injuries.

Jimmy Garoppolo was hurt, so Purdy filled in, but their stats were shockingly comparable. Both players completed roughly 67 percent of their throws while averaging about seven yards per attempt. Jimmy G was renowned for his rapid release and high productivity levels. Brock produced figures that were comparable to those of the league’s top quarterbacks.

In the present, both quarterbacks are on new clubs as a result of Purdy’s outstanding performance in 2022. Jimmy G signed with the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency, while Lance was just traded to the Dallas Cowboys.

The 49ers had enough faith in the rookie quarterback’s performance, both on and off the field, to make Purdy the team’s starting in 2023.

“I try not to get wrapped up in this world of being an NFL player,” Purdy told Sky Sports. “And, you know, being a starting quarterback, this and that. For me it’s like, I’m human, I mess up.

“I live life just like any other person on this earth. And so, I don’t like to think I’m better than this person or that person. It’s just what God has me doing for a job. I’m very thankful for it.

“And at the end of the day, I just want to go out and play football and I want to  win. I may not be the stereotypical 6’6″ quarterback who’s throwing the deep ball and doing all this crazy stuff. But I find ways to win and I help. I like to think that I help everyone around me get better.”

Brock Purdy started five out of the nine games he played last season, throwing for 1,374 yards, 13 touchdowns, and only four interceptions on 67.1% of his attempts. Prior to Purdy’s elbow injury in the NFC Championship game against the Philadelphia Eagles, which necessitated Tommy John surgery in the off-season, the 49ers appeared to be on track for a Super Bowl run as well.

But Purdy is now healthy and prepared to play this weekend when San Francisco faces the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 of their campaign.
