Can Cowboys Afford To Sign DeAndre Hopkins? What Is The Remaining Cap Space?

One of the more unexpected decisions of the 2023 NFL offseason so far was the recent release of DeAndre Hopkins by the Arizona Cardinals.

The Dallas Cowboys now have plenty of salary cap room as of June 2.

According to statistics from the NFL Players Association, they have more than $21 million. Prior to June 1, they had $10.9 million, then after deciding to split ways with Ezekiel Elliott earlier in the offseason, they were able to add another $10.9 million.

They dismissed Elliott on March 15 and assigned him a post-June 1 cut. Elliott will deduct $5.82 million from the limit this year and about $6 million from the cap the next year instead of $16.72 million.

Although Elliott’s release undoubtedly makes a guy like Hopkins more inexpensive for the Cowboys, it probably isn’t sufficient on its own. They’ll need to spend a portion of their cap space for other things like practice squad call-ups, player incentives, roster bonuses, and various other contractual settlements.

The top wide receiver Hopkins may now sign with any organization that extends him a new deal as an unrestricted free agent. He has the most catches in the NFL over the past ten years, thus he should have a sizable market of interested clubs.

One of the clubs said to be interested in DeAndre Hopkins is the Dallas Cowboys. They have already demonstrated a willingness to change up their offensive roster this season and are presently predicted to have more than $24 million in salary space.

Although the wide receiver was due to earn more than $27 million with the Cardinals for the 2023 NFL season, his release will probably force him to accept a salary reduction with a new team.

The most recent seasoned great wide receiver to get a new deal is Odell Beckham Jr. His contract with the Baltimore Ravens has a maximum value of $18 million for one season. Hopkins might receive an offer from the Cowboys for something in the neighborhood of $20 million for one season if they decide to go a similar path.
