Last season, Mayfield regained respect across the league when he came off the bench two days after being claimed off waivers and led the Rams to a 17-16 comeback victory on Thursday Night Football.

“I don’t know if you can write it any better than that,” Mayfield said. “Obviously we’d like to be a little bit more stress-free, but it’s a pretty damn good story, I’ll be honest with you.”

Mayfield is creating another fantastic narrative this year by beginning 3-1 with Tampa Bay.

After Brady announced his retirement for the second time, the Buccaneers were expected to be among the weakest teams in the NFL.

Tampa Bay then opened the 2023 season with a stunning victory over Minnesota.

But he is leading the team as well as bonding with his teammates.

They headed to the Bahamas, as Bucs general manager Jason Licht disclosed to NFL Network’s Peter Schrager. The vacation occurred following training camp, and the group golfed together.

“Baker is a dude and the players saw it right away. Whether he’s taking the lineman to the Bahamas during our break during camp after final cuts to golf. He’s spotted around town at dive bars with receivers, with Mike Evans, with [Chris] Godwin. It’s not fake. He knows how to be a dude with the team,” Licht told Schrager on “The Season” podcast. “And they love him.”

Baker Mayfield spoke on the Rich Eisen Show this week and validated Licht’s claim regarding the Bahamas vacation and dive bar get-togethers.

“We had three out of the five (starting) guys,” Baker Mayfield began. “Tristan Wirfs, Luke Goedeke and Robert Hainsey. We all went down Labor Day Weekend, the three day break we get with the three preseason games. We went down there, enjoyed some great weather, the water and just had a good time.

Then he discussed the significance of getting everyone out with his wide receivers.

“There’s a couple local watering holes we frequent,” Baker Mayfield said. “Got to get the guys out. You fight hard for each other, you got  to enjoy the down time together. It’s a great group of guys. It’s not like it’s forcing anything, it’s just good friendship and I love those guys.”

Baker Mayfield has thoroughly enjoyed his time in Tampa since his arrival. He’s played golf at local courses with other colleagues, launched his own charity with his wife Emily – the Baker & Emily Mayfield Foundation – with its inaugural event in town, and even supported other local teams, attending the Rays playoff game on Wednesday. Baker is a man of the people as well as a guy.
