Buccaneers’ Mike Evans Takes The Responsibility Of Not Clicking With Tom Brady

Nearly three full seasons into a largely successful professional partnership, Tom Brady and Mike Evans currently seem to be more disconnected than connected.

Buccaneers’ Mike Evans Takes The Responsibility Of Not Clicking With Tom Brady

Over the previous two seasons, Evans and Brady were completely on the same page, but 2022 has been a different story. The connection between Brady and Evans appears to be entirely out of synch, despite the fact that the entire offence has significantly regressed, and the seasoned receiver has now clarified what he believes the problem is. Evans told reporters on Thursday that he needs to improve his ability to create separation on his routes, according to ProFootballTalk.

“It’s a game of inches and everything matters, so I have to be better. I’m used to getting two, or three yards of separation on multiple routes. I’ve got to get back to that,” said Evans on Thursday.

If we’re being completely honest, a bad year for Evans isn’t really a bad year at all. The 29-year-old has been targeted 85 times this season and has 51 receptions for 702 yards and three touchdowns. Evans hasn’t amassed more than 55 receiving yards in a single game for the Buccaneers over the past three weeks. During that time, he has only ever had a maximum of five receptions, and he hasn’t scored a touchdown since Week 4, when he had two.

Evans, however, accepted responsibility for his lack of success in recent weeks and brushed aside the idea that Brady might not be properly interpreting the coverage.

And their coach is at a loss for words.

After Evans only managed two catches (for 31 yards) while being targeted nine times by Brady in Sunday’s 23-17 overtime loss in Cleveland, Todd Bowles responded on Monday, “It’s a good question.”

“Some of them were defensive calls, some of them we just missed it here and there. We’ve got to get that fixed, we’ve got to get them back on the same page.”

“There were too many plays that we were not on the same page and we all were not seeing it the same way,” he said. “We just have to work on it, talk through it and see if we can improve it.”

“Not saying it was anybody’s fault, but it did show up (Sunday) and it showed up a few games before that, and we’ve got to get that taken care of,” Bowles said. “That’s crucial for our success.”
