Bryan Reynolds Requests Trade From Pirates

Could a former Giants prospect return to San Francisco the following year? Power-hitting outfielder Bryan Reynolds asked the Pittsburgh Pirates for a trade on Saturday, so it’s not completely impossible.

The trade request was originally reported on by Jason Mackey of Post-Gazette Sports, who cited sources, and then by Jon Heyman of the New York Post, who said the request occurred as a result of a “impasse” in the sides’ extension negotiations.

The Pirates quickly issued a statement via a team representative confirming Reynold’s request for a trade following Mackey’s story.

Reynolds was chosen by the Giants in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft before being traded to Pittsburgh in 2018 for outfielder Andrew McCutchen and financial considerations, along with pitcher Kyle Crick and $500,000 in international bonus slot money.

Reynolds, who batted.312 with 10 home runs for the San Jose Giants in 2017 and participated in the All-Star Futures Game that year, was ranked as the Pirates’ sixth-best prospect heading into the 2018 MLB season by MLB.com.

Reynolds has hit.281/.361/.481 with 74 home runs since making his MLB debut with the Pirates (against the Giants) in 2019. He was also an MLB All-Star in 2021. He signed a two-year, $13.5 million contract deal before the season began, and in 2022 he played center field for Pittsburgh and posted a.993 fielding percentage while hitting 27 home runs.

The Giants could definitely use the star centre fielder, as Heyman mentioned. Reynold’s switch-hitting power could give a lineup that sorely needs it a boost. San Francisco is looking to improve its center field defense this offseason.
