It is expected that Bronny James, who went into cardiac arrest during a practice in July, will make his court comeback on Sunday when he plays California State University, Long Beach.

Although James has returned to the court with caution and patience, he is now healthy and prepared to play with his teammates as he aims to support USC in its quest for a Pac-12 title and beyond.

As James eases back into head coach Andy Enfield’s rotation, it is still unclear what role he will play for USC after his return. The Trojans have a 5-3 record after losing to No. 11 Gonzaga last weekend, which is a slower start than anticipated.

With James joining the team, USC will have a dependable 3-point shooter, a strong perimeter defender, and a playmaker with a high IQ who can also relieve some of the ball-handling strain off of the Trojans’ starting backcourt, which consists of fifth-year senior Boogie Ellis and freshman sensation Isaiah Collier.

If James gets the chance to prove what he can do this season and chooses to declare for the draft, I still think he is a first-round talent in an NBA Draft class that has more questions than answers. In the middle to late rounds of the inaugural draft, there will be no shortage of teams eager to add a 3-and-D player with James’ natural ability to create plays.

Teams like the Heat, Knicks, or 76ers may all gain from his skill set. He is in his late teens to early 20s. The Pelicans may own the Lakers’ 2024 first-round selection this season. If not, there are clear reasons why they would be a destination. Competitors like as the Bucks might benefit from the depth of guards.

I still find the connection appealing since both players are natural point guards who have transitioned into a secondary creator and scoring positions with a defensive mindset. However, White is another combo guard who fits the same mold given James’ anticipated development as a perimeter shooter and the presumption that he’ll be more of an off-ball, off-the-catch shooter this season.
