Broncos Coach Sean Payton’s Comments On QB Russell Wilson Speaks A Lot About Their Relationship

The Denver Broncos are 0-2 by a hair’s breadth. But head coach Sean Payton isn’t giving pep speeches; instead, following another tight defeat, he has his eyes set on quarterback Russell Wilson.

After finishing 5-12, the Broncos made another trade, this time with the New Orleans Saints for head coach Sean Payton. Payton is well-known for how effectively his offences worked while he was with the Saints, and it was thought that he could get the best out of Wilson.

After a 35-33 loss against the Washington Commanders on Sunday, the Broncos are currently 0-2 on the season. They squandered a 21-3 lead in the first half and failed to convert on a two-point play to force OT following an unbelievable Hail Mary play.

“We have to be better. I have to be better.” Payton lamented after his team’s 35-33 loss to the Washington Commanders, per 9News’ Mike Klis. The loss comes one week after the Broncos dropped their season opener by one point, 17-16 versus the Las Vegas Raiders.

According to Payton, getting the play conveyed appeared to be a difficulty for Wilson and the offence.

Payton criticized the team’s dismal second half after the game.

“There was a number of drives where we’re late with personnel, getting out of the huddle we took a while. That’s got to change. We burned timeouts in the first half, and I’m not used to doing [that]. We’ve got to be better. I’ve got to be better, Russ has got to be sharper getting the play out,” Payton said.

Payton also proposed that Wilson wear a bracelet, which the quarterback opposed when he was with the Seattle Seahawks under Pete Carroll. Carroll praised Geno Smith for wearing a bracelet in November, when Smith and the Seahawks were outperforming expectations. It was a bit of a dig at his former quarterback to which Wilson responded,  “I didn’t know winning or losing mattered if you wore a wristband or not.”

Wilson completed 18 of 32 ball attempts for 308 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception on Sunday.

Despite being 0-2 on the season, the Broncos are not far behind in the AFC West. With a 1-1 record, the Las Vegas Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs are in first place. The Los Angeles Chargers are 0-2 on the season following a 27-24 overtime loss against the Tennessee Titans.

It’s ridiculous to make big predictions about a team’s season after only two weeks. It’s possible that the Payton-Wilson marriage will work out in the end. They’ll undoubtedly be put to the test against the Dolphins and Jets defenses in the near future.

However, with a 0-2 record in games they should have won and the head coach criticizing the quarterback, Denver might be in trouble.
