BREAKING: Christian McCaffrey Parts Ways With the Carolina Panthers; Set to Join the 49ers

Christian McCaffrey is finally free. ‘CMC’ was the eighth pick in the first round of the 2017 draft and ever since he was drafted by the Panthers, McCaffrey established himself as one of the best running backs in the league. While at the time the Panthers did have a good time, over time, the team has seen a steady decline in both talent and performances, which has left McCaffrey dissatisfied with what he has been able to achieve with the team.

Last week there were a lot of rumors that the Panthers were interested in trading McCaffrey. However, it was common knowledge that getting a deal done would be easier said than done since the Panthers would need significant draft picks in order to let go of one of their most talented players.

Adam Schefter broke the news on Twitter saying, “Stunner: Panthers are trading Pro-Bowl RB Christian McCaffrey to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for draft picks, sources tell ESPN. McCaffrey returns to the Bay Area, where he attended Stanford.”

Ian Rapoport shared the exact details of the trade. He said, “Full terms:

— The #49ers get star RB Christian McCaffrey.

— The #Panthers get a 2nd round pick in 2023, a third-rounder in 2023, and a fourth-round pick in 2023. Plus, a fifth-rounder in 2024. Massive.”

Christian McCaffrey joins a much better-suited San Francisco 49ers.

McCaffrey has 393 rushing yards and two touchdowns this season, to go along with 277 receiving yards and a touchdown. The deal gives McCaffrey a chance to be a part of a competitive team for the first time since his rookie year when the Panthers went 11-5 in the regular season.

When healthy, McCaffrey is one of the best dual threats in the NFL. In 2019, he became only the third player in NFL history to have 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season. However, injuries have been the biggest issue for McCaffrey over the past few years. He missed 23 of 33 games during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. If he can stay healthy, McCaffrey can easily turn the 49ers into a division-winning and potentially even a Super Bowl-winning team.
