Owner John Henry received jeers from Boston Red Sox supporters on Monday as he walked through the crowd before the NHL Winter Classic game taking place at Fenway Park.

For Red Sox supporters, 2022 was a difficult year, and the anxiety persisted into 2023. This winter, Boston lost shortstop Xander Bogaerts to free agency and remained largely silent when prominent free agents were signed.

The Red Sox appear adamant about pinching every cent and saving every dollar, despite being one of the most well-known sports brands in the world and a major league baseball club. Uncertain why, but it is clear that Red Sox supporters have had enough and are speaking out about how poorly they believe the team is being run.

While Masataka Yoshida, a Japanese outfielder, was acquired by the team in December, fans are concerned about Rafael Devers, a third baseman who may leave the organisation after this season via free agency.

The Boston Red Sox, Liverpool of the English Premier League, and the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins—who take on the Bruins in the Winter Classic—all belong to John Henry.

When Henry became the owner of the Red Sox in 2002, they hadn’t won a World Series since 1918. Since then, they have won four titles. There is a perception in Boston, though, that Henry and his ownership group now place far less value on the Red Sox’s ongoing on-field success.

After losing to the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series in six games, the Boston Red Sox’s record dropped from 90-72 in 2021 to 78-84 in 2022, good for dead last in the American League East. General manager Chaim Bloom was left to face the fire as the bad news arrived since John Henry was primarily absent in Boston when his club started to falter.

Naturally, not all spectators understood why John Henry was being booed. Even if these are dark times, a privileged fan base may occasionally ask, “What have you done for me lately?”
