Bob Costas Accidentally Calls Guardians Pitcher “Justin Bieber”

Is it too late now to say sorry? That’s what Bob Costas might have been contemplating after he made a comical error during Friday’s Guardians-Yankees Game 2 broadcast on TBS.

When counting the number of pitches Cleveland’s starting pitcher had thrown in the bottom of the sixth inning, Costas confused his Biebers. On Friday’s ALDS between the Yankees and the Giants, Bob Costas made a mistake. He mistook Justin Bieber, the more well-known member of the Bieber family, for Shane Bieber.

Justin Bieber,” Costas said taking a brief pause, “just threw his 84th pitch.”

He didn’t understand his error right away.

A startled Costas exclaimed, “Did I truly call Shane Bieber Justin Bieber?” “I swore I would prevent that. He has probably experienced it before in his life.”

The legendary broadcaster quickly caught himself and was in utter disbelief at his gaffe.

“Trever Stephan is up…Did I actually call Shane Bieber ‘Justin Bieber?’ I vowed that would not happen,” Costas said.

“I’m sure it’s not the first time it’s happened in [Shane’s] life. I wonder if [Justin] is watching the game.

“Shane Bieber, ladies and gentlemen.”

Costas made a humorous but understandable error.

Yes, Shane Bieber is a former Cy Young Award winner and two-time All-Star. However, he is still second to the Canadian music sensation in terms of popularity among Biebers. The two are unrelated (in case you were wondering).

Costas was also correct; this mix-up has happened before.  In 2019, Shane criticized Topps because the trading card manufacturer misidentified him as “Justin” on a baseball card.

Then, Shane wore the nickname “Not Justin” on the back of his jersey for the 2019 Players’ Weekend.

Justin responded by wearing a Cleveland “Not Shane Bieber” jersey out in public.
