Bills Safety Damar Hamlin In Critical Condition After Suffering Cardiac Arrest On Field: Game Postponed

The 24-year-old Buffalo Bills player tripped over an opponent during the opening period of a game against the Cincinnati Bengals and fell to the ground.

Before being transported to a nearby hospital, he received more than 30 minutes of on-field medical care.
About an hour after the incident, the NFL decided to call the game off for the evening.

His team, the Buffalo Bills, later released a statement confirming the cardiac arrest and adding that the player’s heartbeat had been restored on the field.

As the NFL season moves closer to its dramatic play-off stages, the incident triggered a wave of support for Damar Hamlin and brought attention back to the dangers of America’s most popular sport.

After collapsing after tackling Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins, 24-year-old Hamlin was given CPR on the field for several minutes. Around 16 minutes after collapsing, according to the ESPN broadcast, Damar Hamlin was given oxygen while he was brought off the field and placed in the ambulance. He was subsequently taken to the close-by University of Cincinnati Medical Center.

Damar Hamlin is reportedly sedated and labelled in critical condition, per the Bills. Early on Tuesday morning, the University of Cincinnati Medical Center did not plan to issue a statement.

“Our thoughts are with Damar and the Buffalo Bills. We will provide more information as it becomes available,” the league said in a statement just after 10 p.m. ET. “The NFL has been in constant communication with the NFL Players Association which is in agreement with postponing the game.”

Damar Hamlin was mobbed by the entire Bills sideline while receiving treatment. He was being treated by sports trainers, and other Bills players were consoling and apparently upset. Many players turned away from the distressed Hamlin.
