Bills Coach Sean McDermott Reacts To Stefon Diggs Outburst

Stefon Diggs, a wide receiver for the Buffalo Bills, voiced his displeasure to quarterback Josh Allen late in the game during Sunday’s divisional playoff loss to the Cincinnati Bengals before quickly leaving Highmark Stadium.

Before the coaches addressed the team, according to reports made following the game, Diggs tried to leave the locker room with his belongings but was stopped by practice squad running back Duke Johnson.

Since the wide receiver moved to Buffalo in 2020, Allen and Diggs have been among the NFL’s top one-two punches, but that wasn’t exactly the case on Sunday against the Bengals. Despite Diggs’ four catches, Cincinnati was able to keep him to only 35 meagre receiving yards.

Diggs was observed on the bench seemingly cursing and raising his hands in Allen’s direction as the Buffalo offence struggled to get anything going against the Bengals. From his tablet, the quarterback didn’t even raise his head. He was aware that engaging in a shouting match with his star wide receiver would not have been helpful.

Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott explained after the game that Diggs’ frustrations were simply due to his competitive nature.

“He’s a competitive guy,” McDermott said. “That’s what makes him good is what you saw.”

“He’s very competitive like we all are. We work extremely hard at these jobs to be the best we can possibly be, and it hurts. I wouldn’t want a guy that doesn’t hurt, right? So when you put it all on the line out there, we put it all on the line, and tonight it wasn’t good enough. That’s the part that stings.”

During Diggs’ three seasons with the organisation, the Bills suffered a string of heartbreaking playoff defeats, and it’s difficult not to wonder if the franchise will ever find a way to capture the championship after coming up short so frequently.

After a 27-10 thrashing of the former Super Bowl favourites, the Bengals advance to the AFC Championship for the second year in a row for the first time in franchise history.
