He also questioned the players about the attacks’ planning and referred to the hijackers’ cooperation. While several players who were present claimed to ESPN they did not remember it, other players who were on the squad at the time corroborated the tale to ESPN.

On Thursday, McDermott said that he intended to speak to the team later, just as he did at the time of the incident.

“As I mentioned to the team [in 2019] that I regretted and apologized for me not doing a good job of clearly communicating my point,” McDermott stated. “I’m going to do the same with the team today when they’re done meeting, so that if there’s anyone new that they understand how important that is to me and my family because it’s an important event, a horrific event, in our history.”

Putting football aside, though, McDermott also comes out as a clumsy, uncomfortable man who lacks the instinct of when to engage his players. He is essentially Michael Scott of professional football. McDermott could be taking himself too seriously when giving motivating lectures. It appears as though he hasn’t rehearsed them in front of a mirror before speaking to those who are expected to listen to what he says.

About 300 miles to the north of New York City, the site of the attacks is Buffalo. Even though 9/11 was more than 22 years ago, many people in the region still find it to be a horrible and recent incident. Although McDermott apologized, there are many legitimate concerns regarding his motivation for bringing up 9/11 in that situation.

Buffalo will likely try to move past this and concentrate on Sunday’s football game, but McDermott should still be held accountable by his employer and the media. Such claims should not be dismissed, and Tyler Dunne deserves praise once more for his crucial sourced reporting.
