Bill Belichick Responds To Rex Ryan’s Critique
In the middle of his most challenging season to date, Belichick’s New England team dropped its fifth straight game on Sunday, falling to an AFC-worst 2-10. The two worst head coaching seasons for the three-time AP Coach of the Year were in his final season with the Cleveland Browns in 1995 and his inaugural season with the Patriots in 2000, both of which ended with a 5-11 record.
Bill Belichick Responds To Rex Ryan’s Critique
One day following the Patriots’ 6-0 defeat to the Los Angeles Chargers at Gillette Stadium, the head coach of New England was questioned about Ryan’s claim that the Patriot Way “exhausts” players during an appearance with WEEI’s “The Greg Hill Show.”

“Yeah, I’m not really sure what he’s talking about,” Belichick replied. “Rex has never been with the Patriots. I’m not really sure what that means, either. But we’re going to do the best we can to prepare the team and compete every week. So, that’s what we’re going to do. Whatever that is.”
Ryan went on to say that the team’s catchphrase, “The Patriot Way,” was effective only when Tom Brady was leading.
“This team plays like they’re exhausted and the ‘Patriot Way,’ that’s it,” Ryan continued. “It exhausts these kids. Tom Brady was the only reason you won anyway. I’m just telling you the difference.… I said from the jump they would never win again. I said they would never win again when that guy trotted down to Tampa. Because I know how draining that is to those kids and that is what you’re facing right now.

You pick all the players, you do all this. Bill Belichick, is greatest in the history, I will never dispute that. I’ve had my a– kicked by him a million times but if you think for a minute it wasn’t about Tom Brady, you’re absolutely crazy.”
Before joining ESPN as an analyst, Ryan coached in the AFC East for eight seasons. From 2009 to 2016, he faced Belichick’s then-dominant Pats squad directly. The Patriots (2–10) are currently suffering through their worst season under Belichick, and Ryan and other people are criticizing a squad that has fallen from grace.

Belichick doesn’t need to openly criticize Ryan because he can let his six Super Bowl victories as a head coach speak for themselves. Beyond his legacy, Belichick’s long-term plans in Foxborough are still unknown.
