Bill Belichick & Ernie Adams Swear To Take ‘SpyGate’ Details To Grave

With a smirk, Ernie Adams took a sip from his water glass and warned reporters not to ask too many questions about the largest scandal in NFL history.

Bill Belichick & Ernie Adams Swear To Take ‘SpyGate’ Details To Grave

When the Patriots were discovered videotaping the New York Jets’ signals in Week 1 of the 2007 season, Adams was the team’s director of football research. There are still unanswered concerns about Spygate even twenty years later, and Adams has no desire to address them at this time.

“Just so you know,” Adams said on Apple TV’s documentary on the Patriots’ dynasty, “on this whole video thing, the Jets’ game in 2007, I’m not going to re-open that. Could I tell you stories? Yes. It’s going to the grave with me.”

The documentary ‘SpyGate,’ the fourth instalment of the series, retraces the hardships faced by New England during the Patriots’ 2007 cheating scandal, which saw them stealing signals from the New York Jets. Belichick seemed reticent when questioned by documentarian Matthew Hamacheck on the Patriots dynasty’s Spygate period.

Instead of portraying Bill as a sourpuss, the video offers a clear glimpse into the “team-first” mentality that owner Robert Kraft recognized in Belichick prior to selecting him to succeed Bill Parcells. As his time in New England came to a conclusion, Kraft claimed Parcells started to lose focus on using a “team-building” strategy.

“With Coach Parcells, I didn’t feel he always put the team first,” Kraft shared in the documentary. “He was making decisions that were best for Bill Parcells, as opposed [to] for the New England Patriots. I promised myself that in the future, I would find a coach that truly put team first.”

Belichick is being silent about what is perhaps the biggest scandal of his Hall of Fame career, whether out of a desire to save his reputation or his players.

It is in Belichick’s best advantage to diminish the importance of what he and the Patriots accomplished. However, the Jets game footage and Fox Sports’ Jay Glazer’s later claim that goes into specifics of the Patriots’ strategy contradict one other.

“Adams sat in the coach’s box with binoculars and notes of decoded signals with direct audio to Belichick,” Glazer reported at the time. “They literally had the answers to the test before it was given.”

The Patriots could have been forced into surrender by Spygate. New England utilized it as fuel instead. In the regular season, the Patriots had a 16-0 record. The head coach’s blowouts accounted for the majority of their victories.

Is Ernie Adams still with the Patriots?

This time, the “retired” 70-year-old is still offering football guidance, this time at Belichick’s and his alma school, Andover Class of 1971. Following the 2020 season, Adams announced his retirement from the New England Patriots.

What coach has won 5 Super Bowls?

The record for most Super Bowl victories by a head coach is five, held by Belichick. In addition, Belichick is the only head coach in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowl titles.

What is Bill Belichick’s record?

Belichick has coached in the NFL for 29 seasons, compiling a record of 333-178. In the regular season, he had a record of 302-165, and in the postseason, he had an outstanding 31-13 record in 44 games.
