Ben Askren Comments on a ‘Dog Sh*t’ Idea Involving Conor McGregor and the Lightweight Title
One of the most anticipated events in UFC this year will be the return of Conor McGregor. ‘The Notorious’ is healing at an incredible pace and if all things go well, he should compete in the UFC before the end of 2022. Given his name and what he brings to the table, it is no surprise that there are a host of names that are vying for the chance to face him.
In a recet interview with ‘The Schmo’, Ben Askren shared his thoughts on Conor McGregor potentially leap-frogging the likes of Beneil Dariush and Islam Makhachev to get a title shot against Charles Oliveira. He said, “The thing that I would hate, which I think has a decent possibility of happening, is them putting Conor McGregor against Charles Oliveira. I think that is such a dogs**t idea. McGregor lost his last fight.”
‘Funky’ continued, “I would be really perturbed. Obviously, I realize show business and selling tickets has a lot to do with who’s getting the shots and I have no issues with that…Makhachev or Dariush…they won a lot in a row. You got to give them a shot at some point…And so the fact that I would be really annoyed if they skipped those two and went straight to McGregor.”
Realistically can Conor McGregor return to action with a direct shot at the lightweight title?
After his recent title defense, the lightweight champion Charles Oliveira called out Conor McGregor for a fight. ‘Do Bronx’ has been in the UFC for the better part of a decade now, but no one in the UFC will give him a payday like Conor McGregor will.
Recent reports suggest that a fight between Oliveira and Makhachev is being worked on for October this year in Abu Dhabi. If that is the case, Conor McGregor will not get a direct shot at the title. However, ‘The Notorious’ is only one win away from securing a title shot at lightweight in the UFC.
