Bengals vs Steelers Week 1 2022 Game Scores, Stats & Highlights: Joe Burrow and Co Open the Season With a Loss in Over Time to the Steelers

The first week of the 2022 NFL season is behind us and now both fans, as well as the teams themselves, have a decent understanding of what the rest of the season might look like for them. Unfortunately for Joe Burrow and the Bengals, their first game of the new season did not go as the AFC champions succumbed to a 23-20 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Going into the game, the Bengals were heavy favorites to win the game. Unfortunately, their offensive line failed to contain the likes of Cameron Heyward and TJ Watt, which resulted in a poor opening performance for Joe Burrow. The former LSU man turned the ball over five times and was sacked seven times.

Joe Burrow and the Bengals falter in game one

The first touchdown of the game was extremely comical, to say the least. Following a three-and-out from the defense, Cordell Volson gave up a sack to Cameron Heyward on the very first play. In the very next play, Burrow’s throw was intercepted by Minkah Fitzpatrick, who ran the ball for a 31-yard touchdown. The first quarter ended 10-7 in favor of the Steelers.

In the second quarter, the Steelers extended their lead early on with a one-yard touchdown by Najee Harris. By the end of the quarter, the Bengals closed down the gap thanks to a field goal by Evan McPherson and a touchdown by Tyler Boyd.

The two teams went into overtime level at 20-20 each. Unfortunately for the Bengals, a 53-yard field goal by Chris Boswell gave the Steelers the win in the dying seconds of the game.

On a positive note for the Bengals, Ja’Marr Chase picked up right where he left off last year. The second-year receiver hauled in 10 catches for 129 yards against the Steelers’ secondary.

Joe Mixon also had a solid debut despite having his left arm cut open in the third quarter. Mixon finished with 145 total yards on 34 touches. After a disappointing start to the season, Burrow and his men hit the road to take on the Dallas Cowboys next Sunday.
