Backup Quarterback Dallas Cowboys? Rush, Grier or DiNucci? Dak Prescott only QB!
Figuring out who the Dallas Cowboys will select as their backup quarterback was one of Tuesday’s major headlines. Cooper Rush, Will Grier, and Ben DiNucci engaged in combat, with Grier and Rush clearly in the lead. As the guaranteed backup quarterback to Dak Prescott, many believed one of the three would be kept on the roster.
Instead, all three were ultimately discharged or waived. DiNucci’s dismissal on Monday wasn’t the biggest shock.
PRESCOTT STAYS!
Prior to Tuesday’s 53-man roster cutoff, the Cowboys waived all three of their backup quarterbacks. As a result, Dak Prescott was the only quarterback listed for Dallas. However, when Grier was released on Tuesday morning, many believed the organization had determined Rush was the QB2. Rush was later revealed to be cut as well, leaving Dak Prescott as the lone quarterback currently on the 53-man roster for the organization.
The Cowboys are keeping one QB on the 53-man roster for the time being: Dak Prescott. Cooper Rush and Will Grier have been released, according to sources. Rush does not go through waivers; Grier does. Likely both will be back in some form – PS or active – to serve as backup.

The team is clearly manipulating the roster in order to complete transactions before the 3 p.m. CT deadline. Rush won’t have to go through waivers. Therefore the assumption is that he will rejoin the team. Grier has the opportunity to get signed by another NFL team, but if that doesn’t happen, he’ll probably end up on the Cowboys’ practice squad.
WHY WERE RUSH AND GRIER BEING CUT?
We are aware that Dallas will likely continue to keep Rush and Grier on hand. The question today is more about the reason they split the partnership.
The Cowboys may be attempting to keep some flexibility as they get ready for the majority of their roster moves in the upcoming days, if that’s the real reason.

Cowboys released QB Cooper Rush, person familiar with move said. He has accrued at least four years of NFL experience, so he's not subject to waivers. Rush and Will Grier both off initial 53, but at least one likely returns. Rush threw game-winning TD at Vikings in first start. pic.twitter.com/TgX9Fv5JT1

The NFL’s “cut day” is one of the busiest transactional days of the year, but it also sparks a busy few days afterwards. After the cutoff date, teams will add players on injury lists to free up more roster space. In order to strengthen their weak spots, they can also snag other talented players off waivers.
Therefore we can still keep our hopes high. The rooster is yet to be formed as its a process.
