Arizona Cardinals DE J.J. Watt hammers Chipotle for skimpy burrito meals

J.J. Watt, a Pro Bowl defensive end for the Arizona Cardinals, criticized Chipotle on Twitter for consistently shrinking the size of its burritos. Watt tweeted, “Burritos have been getting smaller, it’s high time we open a dialogue about it, We want big burritos back,” he wrote. Watt uploaded a picture of himself holding a burrito. The burrito was so little in his hands that it was difficult to believe that it was a full meal of a 6-foot-5, 288-pound star player.

To taunt them sarcastically, he also added hashtags on his tweet such as “Burrito justice,” “Still hungry,” and “This is supposedly double meat.” Customers of Chipotle have long grumbled about the chain’s serving sizes; now that a well-known athlete is on their side, there is hope that something will change.

Over 4100 people have retweeted what J.J. Watt posted and his tweet has received close to 60,000 likes, and there have been just under 3,000 replies. Many of those responses and remarks are from other customers supporting him and displaying miniature burritos that they claim to have purchased from Chipotle.

The NFL player is reiterating a perception that has been spreading on social media that Chipotle has started serving smaller burritos for cutting costs.

J.J. Watt isn’t the only one complaining about Chipotle

This is not the first time that angry customers have tweeted about this issue. Prior to the NFL star, customers have used beer cans, dollar notes, and rulers to demonstrate smaller burritos and portion sizes on Twitter. Chipotle did not immediately reply to Insider’s request for comment, but the restaurant chain did so in 2021 after learning of the accusations of skimpy meals.

“We are not experiencing any supply-chain shortages, and Chipotle receives an abundance of praise for the incredible value its entrees offer with responsibly sourced ingredients chopped or grilled fresh daily. Chief Corporate Affairs Officer Laurie Schalow told Insider in a statement.

If Chipotle’s portion sizes are shrinking, it won’t be the only food chain doing so. Food chains are now serving smaller portions of food than before as an alternative to raising costs and to prevent driving away potential customers, like J.J. Watt.

The phrase “shrinkflation,” refers to the reduction in the size or amount of food products at the same price. This phrase is frequently used nowadays. Food chains are using supply chain problems and inflation as justifications and excuses for maintaining or even raising their prices while decreasing the amount they actually receive.

The second explanation for this “shrinkflation”  is that since the epidemic, people’s eating habits have changed. Many people now order their food online.  Thus staff members might not feel obligated to serve more food when the consumer isn’t directly in front of them.
