‘Another young guy hanging his boots early’ – Fans react after TE Matt LaCosse announces retirement after seven years in NFL

Matt LaCosse has decided to end his career. The tight end made his NFL retirement official on Instagram. LaCosse thanked all of the people that contributed to his profession in his statement.

The 29-year-old took to social media on Tuesday to announce his retirement from the NFL. In his statement, he thanked his friends, family, teammates, his agent, and the three organizations he played for during his seven-year career, including the Patriots

The tight end stated, “I wanted to take a minute and say thank you to everyone who has helped me chase my ambition. “I’m bidding goodbye to the game I adore, the game for which I have given so much of myself, and I want to sincerely thank everyone who has given so much for me. Without you, I couldn’t have accomplished this ambition.

Being a free agent and not being able to play enough games may have contributed to Matt’s decision to stop his career. Although Matt hasn’t given specific reasons for quitting, we can infer that he spent more time outside the field than inside it during his time in the NFL.

“Since I was a kid I always dreamed of being a professional athlete. It started off with me just wanting to be like my Dad and it turned into something I wanted to dedicate my life to. There were countless ups and downs, but the people above were always there to help me. I truly got to live out my dream.”

In 2015, LaCosse left Illinois undrafted. He played in five games with the Giants between 2015 and 2017, where he spent most of his first two or more NFL seasons. Between two positions with the Giants, he also had a brief run with the Jets. The Broncos started to like the tight end during the close of the 2017 season, and he assumed a bigger role in 2018.

LaCosse recorded 24 catches for 250 yards and one score during his “breakout” season. He signed a two-year contract with the Patriots in the 2019 offseason as a result of his performance. He finally played for the team for three seasons, skipping the 2020 campaign in the process. LaCosse has 13 catches for 131 yards in New England’s 12 games.

LaCosse played in 34 games over his career, making 14 starts, recording 40 catches for 403 receiving yards and two touchdowns. At the time of his retirement announcement, LaCosse, then 29 years old, was an unsigned free agent.
