Although Kim Mulkey’s team still has a lot of work ahead of it, the star forward has continued to be a bright spot for the Tigers (19.6 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game). If it weren’t for their double-digit lead at home during the game and their lackluster effort in the Bulldogs’ subsequent defeat, the loss to No. 1 South Carolina would have been forgiven.

After the loss on Monday, Mulkey remarked, “We can’t seem to defensively get stops with this team when they matter.”

Reese was selected as the preseason SEC Player of the Year and an AP preseason All-American going into her final year. With new transfers, Hailey Van Lith and Aneesah Morrow, LSU was ranked #1 by the AP in their preseason poll. In her season debut on November 6, 2023, Reese finished with 15 points and 12 rebounds, but her team lost 92–78 against AP No. 20 Colorado, causing an upset.

For reasons that were not made public, Reese did not participate in LSU’s next four games. Mulkey later said that problems in the locker room were the reason for Reese’s absence.
