Amidst Increased Scrutiny and Pressure Jeff Saturday Secures a Win on His Debut as a Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts

As is the case every season in the NFL, there are a bunch of changes made in the head coach department across various teams mid-season. The Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts are among a few other teams that have parted ways with their head coach in order to bring in a fresh face. A few days back, Indianapolis Colts parted ways with Frank Reich and was replaced by Jeff Saturday, who was named interim manager.

The appointment of Saturday did not go well with fans as well as pundits given that Saturday had never coached football above the High School level and was most recently working as an analyst for ESPN. It is also reported that Colts owner Jim Irsay made the appointment against the advice of his top executives.

Former Super Bowl-winning coach blasts the appointment of Jeff Saturday by the Indianapolis Colts

In a recent episode of NFL today, Bill Cowher made his thoughts on the appointment of Jeff Saturday very clear. He said, “For an owner to hire a coach who has never been an assistant at the college level or pro level, and to oversee a lot of candidates that are qualified for that job as we see in Steve Wilks, an opportunity to build a resume, it is a disgrace to the coaching profession. And in regards to how this thing plays out, what happened in Indianapolis is a travesty.”

In their first game under Saturday, the Colts secured an impressive 25-20 win over the Las Vegas Raiders. Matt Ryan led from the front as he completed 21 of 28 passes, threw for 222 yards, and secured one touchdown for his team. Given all that has gone on in the past week, a win over the Raiders on short notice is an impressive feat for someone who has no experience coaching at such a high level.

It will be interesting to see how far Jeff Saturday can take the Colts and how the association between the two parties will pan out over the coming months.
