Over the last decade or so, the influx of foreign players in the NBA has increased manifold. The quality of players coming in has increased to such a level that some of the best players in the league right now are foreigners. Hoping to join that category is Alperen Şengün of Turkey, who plays for the Houston Rockets.

Şengün was selected as the 16th overall pick in the first round of the 2021 draft by the Oklahoma City Thunder, he was later traded to the Houston Rockets for two future first-round picks. It was the second-highest selection of a Turkish player after Enes Kanter was selected third overall in 2011. For Şengün basketball was not always a clear choice. While he liked the sport, his parents wanted him to pursue swimming. Early on as a child, Şengün competed in both sports simultaneously. However, he was forced to make a choice between the two as time and other resources became an issue.

From 2018 to 2021, Şengün played for three clubs in Turkey’s basketball league. Namely, Beşiktaş, Teksüt Bandırma, and Bandırma Kırmızı. The 20-year-old’s performances were enough to put him on notice amongst the biggest teams in the States when he enrolled for the draft in 2021. As a rookie with the Houston Rockets, Alperen Şengün played 72 games and he averaged 9.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists, and 0.9 blocks per game.
