Alex Rodriguez Is Not Happy With Yankees Deciding To Give Joey Gallo Jersey No. 13

Alex Rodriguez was a vital member of the New York Yankees from 2004 to 2016, making several appearances in the All-Star Game and contributing significantly to their 2009 World Series triumph.

With 351 home runs to his credit, sixth most in franchise history, he has made a strong case for having his No. 13 retired alongside the greats who already sit in Monument Park at Yankee Stadium.

The fact that the team hasn’t retired his number yet actually irritates the three-time MVP.

Rodriguez stated that he gets along well with Hal Steinbrenner and the company, but he feels that his position at FOX could prevent him from joining Monument Park anytime soon since he doesn’t “sugarcoat” his evaluation of the group.

“I’m too critical of the Yankees, and that doesn’t help my case,” Rodriguez explained. “But I get paid to tell the truth…My number should be retired. If it’s not retired, so be it.

“Yeah, of course, it bothers me. It’s less about bother, but of course, it would be nice to be recognized in one of the coolest places to be in Yankee history, but that’s not my decision.”

For the Yankees, Rodriguez wore No. 13 from 2004 to 2016, with the team not wearing the number from 2001 to 20.

Gallo was permitted to wear No. 13, just as he had done while playing with the Rangers after he was acquired by the Yankees from Texas in the 2021 season.

Throughout his disastrous 140-game stint in New York, Gallo wore that shirt, and the Yankees did not distribute it to a single player in 2023.

After Rodriguez’s 22-year career—12 of which he spent with the Yankees—came to an end, the Bombers had no one wearing his No. 13 until Gallo arrived via trade with the Texas Rangers in the 2021 season.

Gallo hit a homer in 140 games 159/.291/.368 with 46 RBI, 25 home runs, and 194 strikeouts.
