Alex Galchenyuk Made Threats Against Killing Police Officers Following Arrest For Hit-And-Run

On Friday, the Arizona Coyotes released forward Alex Galchenyuk from his contract, just 13 days after signing him as free agency.

On July 1, the first day of unrestricted free agency, 29-year-old Galchenyuk inked a one-year agreement earning $775,000 against the NHL salary cap.

According to Katie Strang of The Atlantic, Alex Galchenyuk was detained on July 9 and charged with several offenses. Hit-and-run on private property, disorderly conduct, disobeying orders, resisting arrest, and threatening or intimidating behaviour are among the allegations.

Galchenyuk was detained on Sunday, according to a Scottsdale Police Department official who talked to The Associated Press on Thursday. He was charged with a hit-and-run on private property, disorderly conduct, refusal to comply, resisting arrest, and threatening or intimidating behaviour. According to the spokeswoman, there were no casualties and only minor property damage in the hit-and-run.

“I’m gunna chop you and your daughter,” Galchenyuk told officers during the incident, according to the police report, adding, “One phone call and you’re all dead, your whole family, your whole blood line is dead.”

The article claims that the 11-year NHL veteran, who spent a large portion of his boyhood in Russia, mentioned having ties to Moscow while making many racist slurs directed at an officer-in-training.

Later, he claimed the threats were a joke.

The Coyotes released a statement on Friday acknowledging the event.

“We are aware of the incident involving Alex Galchenyuk and strongly condemn this type of behavior,” the team said. “Once the Club was made aware of the allegations, we immediately began the process of terminating his Standard Player’s Contract through the proper channels in conjunction with the National Hockey League.”

Galchenyuk was booked into the Scottsdale City Jail on misdemeanour charges and released Monday on his own recognizance.

The future is uncertain for Alex Galchenyuk since the NHL may impose more sanctions once the results of the police investigation are made public.

Galchenyuk’s contract termination by the Coyotes raised questions about the “off-ice situation” that led to this choice by the franchise.
