As the Crimson Tide start training on Saturday for the Rose Bowl, he will start working with the squad right away, according to the source.

Hiring a former Wolverines staff member is a terrific approach to get ready for Alabama vs. Michigan in the Rose Bowl, which is just two weeks away. Bruce Feldman reports that George Helow will begin working right away.

Bringing in former employees to prepare for opponents is not a novel coaching idea; in fact, several head coaches hire “analysts” specifically for these matches. He coached at Michigan for the 2021–2022 seasons before leaving the team after the previous campaign.

With Coleman Hutzler, the coach of outside linebackers and coordinator of special teams, leaving to take over as defensive coordinator at Mississippi State at the end of the season, Helow could wind up being a staple on the Crimson Tide’s coaching staff.

This move couldn’t come at a better moment for Alabama. In preparation for their game against Michigan, where quarterback Jalen Milroe will go up against a formidable Wolverines front seven, the Crimson Tide have begun training.

George Helow’s experience working under Michigan defensive coordinator Jesse Minter in 2022 is a major factor in this decision. Though he won’t be bringing in someone to interpret signals a la Connor Stalions, Nick Saban will be able to assist with preparation.

Helow’s experience working with Nick Saban is not entirely new. Although he graduated from Ole Miss, he began his collegiate coaching career in 2012 as a defensive intern for a national championship-winning Alabama squad. As a graduate assistant and safeties coach at Florida State, Georgia, and Colorado State, he also has coaching experience. 2013 saw him win a national championship at Florida State as well.

Although Saban frequently has assistant coaches leave, Coleman Hutzler is the only one who has left since the season finished.

Helow is expected to start working “immediately,” per a story from The Athletic. The game between Michigan and Alabama is scheduled to begin on January 1 at 4 p.m. CT. Helow will have just more than two weeks to provide his insights on Michigan’s defensive strategies before the teams play for the first time since 2019.

Michigan’s defense finished seventh in scoring defense (13.4 points per game) and third in total defense (277.1 yards per game) in the country in 2022. The team finished fourth in total defense (316.2-yards per game) and 12th overall the previous year.

Who is George Helow?

Alabama is hiring George Helow, the former linebackers coach at Michigan, an informed source told The Athletic on Thursday. As the Crimson Tide are ready to play his old club, Michigan, in a College Football Playoff semifinal at the Rose Bowl, the 36-year-old Helow is scheduled to start working right away.
