Agent Rich Paul Makes A Great Point About Loyalty

Rich Paul joined the inner circle of No. 1 overall pick LeBron James following the 2003 NBA Draft. Paul began to network in the sports world, eventually landing a position under former agent and current New York Knicks club president Leon Rose.

Paul left CAA (Creative Artists Agency) in 2012 to establish Klutch Sports Group. He took on LeBron as a customer and built the company into what it is now. They now represent 34 NBA players and have added 25 NFL players to their roster.

Paul appeared on 60 Minutes with Bill Whitaker. Rich Paul was asked about ‘player loyalty’ in professional sports by Whitaker. His reaction was amazing.

“Player loyalty to what If I can be traded in the middle of the night to another team? What I should be (doing is) educating myself to where, if this isn’t going the way I thought it was supposed to go (then) I can switch up… I have options. What’s the sense in having money with no options?”

Of course, this is a driving attitude behind the Anthony Davis-New Orleans Pelicans split. In 2018, Anthony Davis sacked his agency and recruited Rich Paul to get out of his $127 million deal with NOLA.

Rich violated NBA rules by openly demanding a trade, which resulted in a $50,000 punishment. When Anthony Davis was moved to the Los Angeles Lakers with LeBron James, that money meant nothing in the larger scheme of things.

The issue of loyalty has long been debated in the NBA and other professional sports. While some players want to stay with the team that drafted them, establishing a deep connection and hoping to win a championship with their first team, this narrative only applies to a select few, as only a few can win a championship with their first team.
