After Merely Performing Last Season QB Mitch Trubisky Secures A Contract Extension With Steelers

In the previous offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to a two-year, $14.3 million contract with free agency quarterback Mitch Trubisky. He had a salary of almost $10 million in 2023, but on May 18 he agreed to a two-year contract with the group.

After Merely Performing Last Season QB Mitch Trubisky Secures A Contract Extension With Steelers

Omar Khan, the general manager of the Steelers, said the organization was nearing completion of an extension for Trubisky, who was about to enter the last year of a two-year deal for $14.285 million, during an interview on “The Pat McAfee Show” on Thursday.

“We feel good about our quarterback room, so that was an important piece,” Khan said. “We’ve obviously got Kenny Pickett as our starter. We feel really good about Mitch Trubisky and the role he’s in, and he feels good about it. And we’ve added Mason Rudolph, so we’re really excited about our QB room”

The current deal for Trubisky is for three years and $19.4 million. Over the course of his deal, he may make up to $33 million, according to reports. Trubisky’s cap number for 2023 allegedly decreases as a result of this contract.

The Steelers cut their cap burden this season and have stability at quarterback for the next two seasons thanks to Trubisky’s agreement, which allows him to earn up to $33M dependent on incentives. Trubisky will back up Kenny Pickett.

Trubisky started out playing for the Chicago Bears. He was taken by them in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, second overall. He spent his first four NFL seasons with the Bears.

Despite aiding the Bears in their 2020 playoff run, Trubisky signed with Buffalo in 2021 and played Josh Allen’s backup that year.

As the Steelers’ starting quarterback to begin the 2022 campaign, Trubisky was replaced by rookie Kenny Pickett midway through the team’s fourth game.

The rest of the season saw Trubisky play much looser anytime he was used in place of the Steelers’ starter quarterback, who appeared to be overly reserved at times.

Despite being designated the Week 1 starter, he was benched by rookie Kenny Pickett in their Week 4 game against the New York Jets.

Trubisky had a 2-3 record and threw for 1,252 yards, four touchdowns, and five interceptions during the 2022–23 season.
