After Angel Reese’s Big Turnover in Final Seconds, Auburn Beat LSU is a Shock NCAA Result

On Sunday, Auburn defeated LSU, ranked seventh, 67-62, behind 21 points from Honesty Scott-Grayson.

Having won a record-breaking 16 straight games, LSU, the defending national champion, came into the game with the top-scoring offense in the country (93.8 points).

In the win at home against LSU (16-2, 3-1), Auburn (12-5, 1-3 SEC) forced 15 turnovers and limited the Tigers to a season-low in points.

In regulation, with 10.4 seconds left, JaMya Mingo-Young grabbed the ball from Angel Reese of LSU to secure the victory. Auburn was ahead by two points after she made both of her free throws.

“We guarded that play all week,” Johnnie Harris, the head coach of Auburn, stated. “We knew, from the way (Reese) caught the ball, what she was going to do. We knew that she was gonna drive it in that situation. … Once she put it down, we knew she was going to score. She wasn’t going to pass it.”

Mingo-Young led Auburn with 13 points at the end and five assists. Eight points were scored by Kaitlyn Duhon, while Taylen Collins finished with six points and seven rebounds.

After defeating No. 4 Tennessee at home on January 27, 2022, Auburn’s victory over a top-10 opponent was its first since.

7,720 people showed up for the game, making it the most ever for a women’s match at Auburn’s Neville Arena.

“Honestly, I don’t know if they were there for us, or if they were there just to see LSU,” Scott-Grayson said. “But we knew we had to go out there and put on a show, either way. We weren’t backing down from (LSU) just because of the name.”

Reese led LSU with 24 points. Now, in all 50 of her games at LSU, she has scored ten or more points. As the only players in LSU history to score in double figures in 50 straight games, Reese joined Seimone Augustus in that feat.

In addition to Flau’jae Johnson’s 12 points, Aneesah Morrow contributed 12 points and 15 rebounds.

A back-and-forth contest is won by Auburn.

After the first quarter, Auburn had an eight-point lead, but LSU started the second quarter on a 10-0 run. The lead changed seventeen times as the two teams battled back and forth for the remainder of the match.

With 6:34 remaining, Scott-Grayson drove for a layup to give Auburn a lead it would not let go of. Nine free throws were missed by LSU, four of which were missed in the fourth quarter alone.

In the game, LSU made just two 3-pointers, one of which came on the final play of the contest from Hailey Van Lith in a desperate attempt to win. In the victory, Auburn made four of its eleven 3-point attempts.

“We knew Auburn would get in lanes and pressure you and make it hard to complete a pass,” LSU head coach Kim Mulkey stated. “Energy and enthusiasm, (Auburn) just came at us. … Their effort was better than our effort.”
