“A Reason to do it”: NFL Analyst Reveals One Big Reason Why the Panthers Would Fire Matt Rhule ‘Sooner Than Later’

The majority of NFL head coaches’ job security is an illusion. While certain stalwarts, like Bill Belichick, Andy Reid, and Pete Carroll, are essentially hired for life, the bulk of the league’s play-callers is always being evaluated and criticized. It’s time to pay close attention to coach Matt Rhule’s stay as the Panthers face the strong potential of their 1-3 start turning into a 1-6 hole (their next three opponents being the 49ers, Rams, and Buccaneers).

In 2020, Matt Rhule made an effort to advance Teddy Bridgewater’s career. It was a failure. In 2021, Matt Rhule made an effort to resurrect Sam Darnold’s career. It went horribly, horribly. In 2022, Matt Rhule is attempting to resurrect Baker Mayfield’s career. It is completely ineffective.

Matt Rhule’s job in danger?

Matt Rhule’s buyout after a disappointing second season may have rescued him. Will owner David Tepper fire Rhule during the current campaign or wait until the end of the year when his third season as an NFL head coach starts to fall apart?

Mike Florio reported via ProFootballTalk: “Here’s a reason to do it sooner than later. If Rhule lands a job in the coming NCAA hiring cycle, the Panthers would get a dollar-for-dollar credit as to any remaining buyout. If Tepper keeps Rhule until after the season, the college jobs might be filled.”

At this point, it’s evident that all we can do is speculate, but Rhule’s time with the Panthers hasn’t gone as planned. Matt Rhule has a record of 11–26 over the last two seasons and is unlikely to make the playoffs this year.

Due to Mayfield’s ineptitude, the Panthers’ opponents possess the ball for a league-high 35+ minutes per game, which causes the defense to tire easily. There is minimal chance for improvement for this terrible team.
