A.J. Brown: When We Went Up 27-21, I Knew Deep Down We Could Lose

For most people who were supporting the Eagles in Sunday’s Super Bowl, taking a six-point lead late in the 3rd quarter was cause for celebration. Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown felt differently.

As the Eagles led the Chiefs 24-21 late in the third quarter, one of the most important choices Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni had to make in Super Bowl LVII occurred on a fourth-and-six from the Chiefs’ 15-yard line.

While in field goal range on a fourth down a few plays earlier and again on a touchdown drive in the first half, Sirianni chose to make a field goal instead, increasing the Eagles’ advantage to six points. The decision to kick was somewhat unexpected given his past choices and how the Eagles had performed during the season. It also garnered some criticism for being too cautious at the moment.

Naturally, the Eagles would lose the following game, and wide receiver A.J. Brown stated on Tuesday from the team’s facilities that it seemed like a terrible omen at the time.

“When we went up 27-21, I knew deep down there was probably a chance we were going to lose,” Brown said were going to lose, via Howard Eskin of WIP.

For nearly three minutes of the game, the Eagles managed to maintain a six-point advantage before Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs scored a touchdown to tie the score.

The Eagles were able to respond with a touchdown after the Chiefs scored once more to extend their lead to 35-27.

The Chiefs were able to run down the clock and kick the game-winning field goal with 8 seconds remaining, which was unfortunate for the Eagles. The Eagles lost because they were unable to come up with a miraculous last-second play.

In order to wrap up his first season with the Eagles, Brown said it has been a “difficult 48 hours” and that he has been “dreading” giving interviews and clearing out his locker. Brown shouldn’t be disappointed with his individual performance despite the loss. In his first Super Bowl, the receiver grabbed six catches for 96 yards, including one for a touchdown.
