Agent Scott Boras Appreciates Dodgers Ownership For Fierce Moves
The Los Angeles Dodgers and Scott Boras have not often signed free-agency contracts together. The last Boras client to sign with Los Angeles was Hyun-Jin Ryu back in 2012 on a six-year, $36 million deal. James Paxton and J.D. Martinez signed with the Dodgers the previous two offseasons on extremely modest $10 million and $7 million agreements, respectively.
Agent Scott Boras Appreciates Dodgers Ownership For Fierce Moves
With earnings of well over $1 billion in the 2022 offseason alone, Boras has long dominated MLB offseasons. Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger are two of the Dodgers’ native Boras clients, but those significant agreements haven’t arrived with the team.
Scott Boras praised the Dodgers for their willingness to spend money and sustain success, which while it's worked for them, is a bit self serving considering he represents two free agents who are still, somehow, looking for jobshttps://t.co/laqaK4h8ZV

However, he commended the franchise and ownership group for creating a dependable, successful business in a recent interview. and using their “flexibility” in terms of money to do so.
“There always comes a litmus test for a franchise and it usually comes after the first world championship,” said Boras to the Dallas Morning News. “If you sustain that championship level, you build the kind of legacy that few do. The Dodgers and Astros, for example, have always made the kind of move that is most difficult – the last one to a championship level for that season and beyond. It’s the kind of move that requires some [financial] flexibility in the moment; however it’s the kind of move that separates them from one-and-done champs to championship legacy.”

In addition to re-signing Clayton Kershaw, who missed the most of the 2024 season due to injury, the Dodgers also committed $700 million to Shohei Ohtani, $325 million to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, $136.5 million to Tyler Glasnow, and $23.5 million to Teoscar Hernandez.
By doing the arithmetic, that comes out to an expenditure of about $1.2 billion in contracts that are certain. The Oakland A’s, on the other hand, have exactly zero guaranteed contracts until 2025 and beyond. That is actually zero; it is not a typo.
Surprisingly, Snell, the two-time Cy-Young award winner, is still unsigned two weeks before Opening Day for the rest of the MLB and six days before the first game of the 2024 MLB season.

Although the Los Angeles Angels are currently the front-runners to sign Snell this season, Boras’ comments do imply that the agent respects the Dodgers. Even while it’s still improbable that Snell would sign with the Dodgers, this raises the stakes as the regular season draws closer.
It is usually true that clubs must make financial commitments in order to succeed; the Rangers’ success last season was largely attributed to their signings of Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, and Nate Eovaldi, as well as their readiness to assume riskier, more costly players like Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom. However, clubs are starting to realize that there is no one approach to win a World Series in the current era of professional baseball.
