The depth of the New York Mets’ outfield has been increased. Trayce Thompson, an experienced outfielder, was signed by the Mets to a minor league contract that includes an invitation to Spring Training. SNY’s Andy Martino first reported on the deal.

The signing of Thompson—the younger brother of NBA great Klay —is viewed as a low-risk, straightforward depth addition. He would probably be the fourth or fifth outfielder on the big league roster if he makes it.

Although his numbers aren’t particularly outstanding, he has the ability and can consistently receive at-bats at the top level.

But rather than for his baseball career, Trayce is more well-known for being the younger brother of NBA great and Golden State Warriors player Klay Thompson. That being said being said, that doesn’t upset Trayce in the slightest, as he seems used to it.

The recently acquired outfielder for the New York Mets is aware that he will always be referred to be Klay Thompson’s brother, no matter where he ends up. The 32-year-old has played for five different clubs over portions of seven major league seasons.

“I’m proud,” Trayce said Saturday about being the younger sibling of the Warriors star. “I understand his status in the sports world, but … I’m his No. 1 fan, me and our big brother Mychy [Mychel]. Everything I’ve wanted him to accomplish in life he’s accomplished. I’m proud to be Klay Thompson’s brother. I don’t even view him as Klay Thompson — that’s my brother Klay.

“I’m extremely proud, so it doesn’t bother me.”

For the most part of his career, Thompson has been a “Four A” player since he is too talented to play regularly at the AAA level and suffers in the Major Leagues.

Trayce participated in 72 games for the LA Dodgers and the Chicago White Sox in 2023. He batted.163/.285/.294 with 6 home runs and 17 RBIs, finishing the season with a -0.7 WAR.
