How Will Joel Embiid’s Knee Injury & Absence Impact 76ers Performance?
Star player Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers will have surgery to correct a meniscus issue on his left side, the team said on Sunday.
How Will Joel Embiid’s Knee Injury & Absence Impact 76ers Performance?
Embiid will likely lose a significant amount of time, reported Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN and Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium.
This season, Embiid has fluctuated in and out of the starting lineup because of a persistent knee injury. He sustained a meniscus injury during a defeat to the Golden State Warriors on January 30.
"I'm told that the hope is that [Joel] Embiid misses one to two months…If a full repair is needed in surgery, that's going to be a significantly longer recovery time period."@ShamsCharania updates on Joel Embiid's injury.

According to The Athletic, a misplaced flap “is considered to be a type of tear of the meniscus.”
“Joel Embiid will have a corrective procedure this week to address an injury to the lateral meniscus in his left knee. An update will be provided following the procedure,” the statement reads.
The projected duration of his recovery from the treatment is “an extended period of time,” as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

With Joel in the starting lineup, the 76ers have improved significantly on both ends of the floor, averaging 120.6 points per 100 possessions while holding opponents to 110.5 points per 100 possessions. These ratings translate to the second-best offensive and defensive combinations in the league.
Since a player must participate in at least 65 games to be eligible for any of the NBA’s major honors, the injuries constitute an especially serious blow to Embiid’s prospects of winning MVP. Embiid is anticipated to lose a significant amount of time, so it seems he won’t be able to receive the trophy.
"The Sixers without him, they might be a lottery team… I hope he's not out an extended period of time."

With an average of 35.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists, and 1.8 blocks in 34 games while shooting 36.6 percent from outside the arc and 53.3 percent from the field, Embiid is undoubtedly the finest player in the league this season.
The Sixers, who are now seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 30-18 record, would suffer a serious blow if they lost the big man for an extended period of time. Mo Bamba and Paul Reed have stepped in at the five, but neither has come close to replicating Embiid’s success.

The 76ers will obviously miss having Joel around. In addition to being the league’s top scorer, he also has the greatest use rate (38.6%) of any player. Without him, Philadelphia’s record this season is 4–10.
The 76ers will have much less time to plan their approach before the trade deadline on February 8. They are aware that going all in for the title may cost them their max cap space this summer, so they have been analyzing the pros and cons of doing so. The injury to Embiid and his absence from the court might alter that calculation.
