Baffled Hailey Van Lith Goes Viral After Kim Mulkey’s Drawn Play in Recent LSU Loss

Losing to South Carolina, the team with the highest ranking is one thing. But after losing to Mississippi State for the second time in a row, Angel Reese’s LSU Tigers had serious concerns. The misunderstanding over this late-game move between Kim Mulkey and Hailey Van Lith is the best example of how the 9th-ranked Tigers appeared to have all of their wires crossed at all of the wrong times.

With only 0:36 remaining in the game, LSU cowered for a timeout down 74-68. Mulkey tried to explain the play to her squad for the crucial possession, and the ESPN cameras captured the puzzled expression on Van Lith’s face. Even after her teammates returned to the floor, the highly-regarded transfer guard had to remain in the huddle to make sure her demanding coach understood what she wanted.

Or as one fan so beautifully put it on X, previously known as Twitter: “HVL has no idea what’s being drawn on that clipboard.”

Commenters quickly picked up on the humor, pointing out that she appeared to be a student passing the time until the bell rang or until someone had handed in their homework. Another caustic retort said, “Bless her heart.”

Van Lith stumbles, but Reese shines.

HVL made a crucial three-pointer on the play that could have turned the game into a one-possession contest, so it’s a good thing she went back to explain her part in the action. Her miss proved to be insufficient to keep the Tigers in the game, as Mikaylah Williams managed to clear the glass and put it back for two points for LSU.

Van Lith was in foul trouble the entire time, managing just four points in thirty-one minutes, going 0 for 4 from three-point range, and dishing out three assists to just two turnovers.

Despite Reese’s near-unstoppable performance of 20 points, 18 rebounds, and five steals, it is evident that the Tigers have more serious problems as a team that needs to be resolved before their next game on Sunday against Florida.
