According to a New York Post article, Jared Allen, who played professional football for 12 years with four different teams and had an appearance in Super Bowl 50 with the Carolina Panthers, is still working toward his goal of joining the American curling team for the 2026 Olympics.

His quest began as a bet with a friend to see who could make it into the PGA Tour.

But after learning about the remarkable Olympic ski jumper from England named Eddie the Eagle, Allen decided to try to earn a spot on a larger platform.

When Allen, 41, looked into playing badminton at first, he discovered after some investigation that was “way too much movement for me at this age.”

Allen, who is now ranked 12th on the all-time NFL sacks record, retired from professional football eight years ago. Allen can be elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, but he hasn’t received enough votes to get admitted.

“I read the rules of curling, it was like the winners have to buy the losers beer. Most people start in their 40s, I was like right up my alley,” Allen told The Post. “I think for me, the strategic part was something that was very interesting. Obviously the physical side, I can learn physical things. But, the dynamic of how to determine how hard to throw, tracking ice conditions, paying attention to all those little things. All the minute angles that go into it, that’s  where I think the sport is really fun”

“I think I just enjoy the competition of it,” Allen told Muscle and Fitness.com. “I enjoy learning something new. I’m just kind of the personality that once I’m in, I’m all-in. And so, we are trying to accomplish the goal of qualifying for the (2024) Olympics.”

After that bet five years ago, Allen is still working toward his Olympic dream, which will take him to New Jersey the following week for the US National Curling Championships, which will take place at The Rink at American Dream from January 29 to February 4.

Although Allen claims his abilities have advanced significantly since beginning, he acknowledged the magnitude of the task when he saw John Shuster and the US win the gold in curling at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in 2018.

As teams battle to advance to represent the United States at the 2026 Winter Olympics, this year’s tournament is the first of its kind to be hosted in the region at the highest level of curling.

In addition, Allen wants to improve on his team’s performance in the US National Championships, when they beat Shuster’s group 10–6 in the opening round of round-robin play.
