On Thursday night, the social media feud between former Washington star Robert Griffin III and one of his former coaches, Jay Gruden, reached a new height as Gruden brutally took down his former quarterback.
Robert Griffin III & Jay Gruden’s War Of Words Have Just Further Ignited
During Griffin’s final two seasons in 2014 and 2015, Gruden, the team’s coach, offered his thoughts on the Philadelphia Eagles’ lack of defense for Jalen Hurts in their Wild Card defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After leading the Washington club to a 0-5 start in 2019, Gruden was dismissed after six seasons with a 35-49-1 record.
“If I ever put a QB through what Philly is putting Jalen through, I apologize,” Gruden posted on social media. “Pick up a blitz!”

Griffin told a story on his podcast about Gruden and shared a clip of it on social media in which Gruden responded.
“There was a moment that happened in D.C. that is vividly remembered,” Griffin starts off saying in the clip. “Jay Gruden went to a press conference and he undressed me at that press conference in a way a coach should never undress his starting quarterback. It was after a game and I said in the press conference that ‘the best players in the NFL have the guys around them play at an extremely high level. No one is out there doing it on their own.’
“Now the media pundits and everyone took that and say RGIII threw his teammates under the bus. And I had to eat that for a long time because Jay didn’t back me in the media the next day. He doubled down on it and actually picked me apart in the media.”

That’s when Griffin said that there was more to the story and that Gruden had made him out to be the scapegoat.
“What people don’t know is that the only reason I went to that press conference and said what I said to challenge my teammates through that press conference, was because Jay Gruden asked me to do that,” Griffin said.
“What hurt me about that after I did that in the press conference, not only did Jay Gruden not have my back, but he actually burned me with it the next day. He actually came out the next day and burned me in the media. He came out the next day in our team meeting room and burned me in front of my teammates.”

Earlier in the week, Gruden and Griffin had already been arguing on social media. Gruden even went so far as to criticize Griffin in a post on X that he allegedly removed earlier on Thursday.
“You weren’t good enough,” he allegedly wrote in the deleted post. “Kirk was better. Cleveland didn’t want you. Baltimore [didn’t] either. Quit blaming me.”
The message went viral online until Gruden removed it later.
