What Is The NFL Draft Tiebreak Procedure? Explained

The NFL Draft order is determined each season in part by a series of straightforward yet useful rules known as the NFL Draft tiebreaking procedures. It seems straightforward: the club that finishes worst gets selected first, and the 32nd pick goes to the winning team in the Super Bowl. The opponents’ cumulative winning percentage is known as SOS. It’s as easy as adding up all of the victories, defeats, and ties that the opponents of each side have accrued and dividing that total by the number of games played.

SOS is frequently sufficient to sever most connections, but it’s not always the case. We must dig deeper to ascertain the draft order when two clubs are tied on record and SOS. This is where things become tricky since the method used to break ties differs depending on the situation.

A third set of regulations is used to break ties that arise between teams in different conferences. The procedure used is dependent upon whether teams are in the same division or conference. Before severing non-conference ties, divisional ties are severed. Conference ties are broken next.

First, conference or division tiebreakers are used. The NFL rules states that ties are broken by the following methods if they are not applicable or involve teams from different conferences.

  • Head-to-head, if applicable
  • Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games (minimum of four)
  • Strength of victory in all games
  • Best combined ranking among all teams in points scored and points allowed in all games
  • Best net points in all games
  • Best net touchdowns in all games
  • Coin toss

Teams will trade draft spots in the next rounds if a tied record necessitates the use of tiebreakers. In the event that Team A and Team B were tied at 1-17 and Team A was awarded the first selection in Round 1, Team B would receive the first pick in Round 2, Team A would receive the first pick in Round 3, and so on, according to tiebreakers.

The pick order is randomized each round when three or more teams have the same record. For instance, in the event that Team A, Team B, and Team C are all tied at 1-17 and Team A wins the tiebreakers to decide their first selection, they will select third in Round 2.
