Zion Williamson Contact Clause Will Cost Him A Lot Of Money

The remaining three years of Zion Williamson’s recently signed max deal are no longer guaranteed, according to a report from The Athletic. In July 2022, Williams agreed to a $197 million, five-year contract.

Zion Williamson’s Contact Clause Will Cost Him A Lot Of Money

Williamson did, however, activate a condition in his contract that converts all guaranteed money in the 2025–2026, 2026–2027, and 2027–2028 seasons to non-guaranteed money since he missed more than 22 games in the previous campaign.

It is now possible to waive the 2019 first-overall pick as early as the conclusion of the 2024–2025 campaign. Williamson will lose $126.5 million of his contract as a result of this decision, according to Spotrac.

Williamson has, more often than not in his career, fallen short of expectations due to injury or a lack of conditioning. And it looks like he will now give up millions and millions of dollars as a result.

In July of 2022, Williamson inked a $197 million, five-year contract deal with the Pelicans. However, Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic reports that the remaining three years of that contract are no longer guaranteed because he was limited to just 29 games due to injury last season.

According to Vorkunov, Williamson’s absence from more than 22 games over the previous season activated a provision that changed the guaranteed amount of his contract for those seasons to non-guaranteed.

Since entering the NBA, Williamson’s career has had ups and downs. Despite being one of the most anticipated collegiate talents in recent memory when he entered the NBA, he has missed a substantial portion of time during his career.

Williamson may fulfill the promises if he participates in enough games and meets predetermined weight-in benchmarks this season. If he fails to achieve the required standards, however, he might possibly lose additional money.

The report says, “Williamson’s body fat percentage and weight in pounds must add up to less than 295 in order for the contract to be fulfilled.” “He was listed as weighing 285 pounds last season, meaning his body fat could not be higher than 10 percent.”

Williamson still has time to make a change in his career. This season, the Pelicans center has participated in 23 of 28 games, averaging 22 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.6 assists. Barring a serious injury, he is on track to play a career-high 67 games.
