Soon after quarterback Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs finished his apology tour for his outburst on Sunday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell spoke about the official call that infuriated one of the greatest players in the league.

A pre-snap infraction rendered a Chiefs score in the last two minutes useless.

Video of the call reveals that receiver Kadarius Toney was offsides during a costly play in the Buffalo Bills’ 20-17 loss.

For a while, Mahomes and Chiefs head coach Andy Reid were upset that Toney was penalized by the referees for a penalty for which he was not given a pre-snap warning.

At the NFL Owners Meeting on Wednesday, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell discussed the disputed play. No Chiefs coach, player, or supporter will be satisfied with his reaction.

“I think almost everybody, to my knowledge, is acknowledging the officials were absolutely correct. That’s their job – to call when there’s a foul. There was no question about that foul. It was absolutely the right call. If you didn’t call that our officials would have been subject to criticism also. I find it ironic that I’m standing here answering a question about [when] the officials got it right, and they’re being criticized.”

One of the game’s officials, referee Carl Cheffers, stated that the player is ultimately in charge of setting up onsides.

Cheffers said that the official could have verified he was offside if Toney had inquired.

“Ultimately, if they looked for alignment advice, certainly we are going to give it to them,” Cheffers added. “But ultimately, they are responsible for wherever they line up. And certainly, no warning is required, especially if they are lined up so far offsides where they’re actually blocking our view of the ball.”

Goodell stated that although NFL officials are “second-guessed,” he is “incredibly proud” of their work and feels that better officiating is made possible by technology, which also demonstrates “how many times… that they’re right.”

“They are not perfect. No human being is,” Goodell said. “But the reality is they do an extraordinary job. I find it ironic that I’m standing here answering a question about [when] the officials got it right and they’re being criticized.”
