Coach Eli Drinkwitz Slams College Football Over Perceived Bias Against Florida State

Eli Drinkwitz, the head coach of Missouri, has made it clear that he disagrees strongly with the College Football Playoff (CFP) selection committee. He has taken issue with their choice to exclude Florida State, even though the squad went undefeated and won the ACC championship.

Coach Eli Drinkwitz Slams College Football Over Perceived Bias Against Florida State

During a Thursday appearance on SiriusXM Radio, Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz blasted the committee for excluding the Seminoles from the playoffs due to star quarterback Jordan Travis’s season-ending leg injury. He called the committee’s reasoning a “complete nonsensical rationalization.”

“I know I’m an SEC guy, but that one bothered me a whole lot,” Drinkwitz said. “To not factor in maybe a team having an unfair advantage in some of their games, it just seemed like to me we were picking and choosing what lens we were going to look through.”

In addition to being an active SEC coach, Drinkwitz was named the conference’s new coach of the year after guiding Missouri to a 10-2 record and a Cotton Bowl trip this year.

The Seminoles, who finished 13-0 and took home the ACC title, made history by being the first Power Five league team to finish unbeaten and miss the postseason.

“If a team in the playoff has a star player get injured, are they going to get removed from the playoff and then we put Florida State back in? That to me was completely nonsensical rationalization, and I know I’m an SEC guy. But, that one bothered me a whole lot, and then to not factor in maybe a team having an unfair advantage in some of their games. It just seemed like to me we were picking and choosing what lens we were going to look through,” the Missouri coach said during an appearance on College Sports on SiriusXM earlier in the week.

The only Power Five conference winner to go undefeated and never make it to the College Football Playoff is Florida State. The committee was afforded the luxury of not having to worry about creating any precedent because the CFP will be growing to 12 teams starting in the upcoming season.
