Regulators Approve XFL-USFL Merger, Led By Russ Brandon Debuting On March 30

XFL CEO Russ Brandon will serve as the league’s executive director.

“We are pleased to have completed the antitrust review process in connection with the proposed merger of the XFL and USFL and intend to play a combined season this spring kicking off on Saturday, March 30,” the two leagues said in a statement. “We are now finalizing terms of the definitive agreement and will share more about this new League in the coming weeks.”

The united entity’s structure is not well understood. Its name, remaining cities and teams, broadcast rights agreements, and player employment terms are just a few of the details that are still being developed. Russ Brandon, the CEO of the XFL, will lead the united league, according to a source. Executives Marc Ross and Jay Rothman of the XFL have also departed the league since the announcement of the merger.

Fox Sports, the league’s owner, created the USFL in 2022 utilizing the intellectual property of the unrelated, long-gone USFL from the 1980s. Following the collapse of the Vince McMahon-owned version of the XFL midway through the 2020 season, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Dany Garcia, and RedBird Capital Partners purchased the league and began its third edition last spring.

What is Russ Brandon doing now?

The CEO and President of the XFL is Russ Brandon. In his role as President, Russ oversees the league’s daily operations and leads strategic planning for football and business operations at the league and team levels.

How much do you get paid in the XFL?

According to reports from ESPN, XFL players receive a weekly salary of $5,000 plus a $1,000 incentive for each victory. This indicates that, with possible bonuses, one player may earn almost $60,000.
