Retired QB Drew Brees Reveals He Throws With His Left Hand Now: “My right arm does not work”

After spending 20 years in the NFL, former quarterback Drew Brees’ right arm suffered so much wear and tear that he eventually turned into a southpaw.

Retired QB Drew Brees Reveals He Throws With His Left Hand Now: “My right arm does not work”

Speaking with ESPN Radio’s Greeny on Tuesday, Brees revealed that he throws left-handed as “my right arm does not work.” According to him, the problem began after he dislocated his shoulder in January 2006.

In many respects, the injury was a turning point. It paved the way for Brees to be signed by the New Orleans Saints as a free agency and for Philip Rivers to assume the starting quarterback position for the San Diego Chargers.

When asked on ESPN Radio’s “Greeny” program if he has had any calls from clubs attempting to entice him out of retirement, Brees, 44, revealed the information on Tuesday. He announced on Tuesday that “there might have been a feeler or two” a year or two after he resigned from the NFL in 2021.

He then added: “Look, I’ll let you in on a little fact. I don’t throw with my right arm anymore. My right arm does not work. So, when I throw in the backyard right now, I throw left-handed.”

Brees was making an appearance to promote a pickleball event he played in with John McEnroe and said, “I can play pickleball because it’s below the waist, but anything above my shoulder I have  a hard time with.”

Although pickleball is played below the waist, Brees acknowledged that he can play the sport. Above the equator, he experiences difficulties.

It’s amazing that he managed to continue for 15 years after the accident, especially considering how long he has been battling with problems.

He went on to pass for 68,010 yards and 190 touchdowns in 15 seasons with the Saints, helping the team win a Super Bowl following the 2009 campaign. Only Tom Brady has more throwing touchdowns and total passing yards than him in his career—80,358.
